What Do You Want to Know About GMO Food? Environmental Impacts

Best Food Facts gathered questions from consumers about foods grown using genetically-modified organisms. From those questions, we developed a five-part video series to address the many angles of this topic, including general information, food safety, nutrition, labeling and environmental impacts.

In this video focusing on the impacts GM crops have on the environment, a mom from California, Karri Hammerstrom, asks tough questions of environmental scientist Dr. Cecilia Chi-Ham from the Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture at the University of California-Davis. We’re interested in understanding what additional questions you have for Dr. Cecilia. Feel free to submit questions below or at http://www.bestfoodfacts.org/food-experts/ask-an-expert.

Shopping for Organic / Non-GMO / Vegan Food at Costco Wholesale Supermarket

Shopping for Organic / Non-GMO / Vegan Food at Costco Wholesale Supermarket

For more info, check out http://www.costco.com/

About a month ago or so, I decided to check out Costco Wholesale Supermarket and I was shocked at all the organic, non-GMO, vegan, whole plant food I was able to find. There was produce, frozen vegetables and fruits, dried fruit, spreads like hummus, jelly, and guacamole, veggie juices, coconut water, cereals, plant milks, pasta, rice, soups, and so much more! Costco is great because not only can you find all these awesome organic, non-GMO, vegan food, but you also save a lot of money by buying food in bulk!

When I was a kid, we would shop at Costco but we didn’t buy what you saw in this video; we bought A LOT of junk food such as meat, dairy, cheese puffs, chips, candy, and chocolates. I am amazed how much a huge wholesaler has transformed in the past decade into a giant health promoting supermarket. Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of junk food in Costco. Always read the food labels and the ingredients list for packages as they still may contain animal-derived products such as eggs, dairy, honey, gelatin, etc. Don’t be fooled by the front cover. Anyway, here are a few items I found at Costco that were plant-based. Enjoy!

Shopping Organic: How to shop for organic, GMO free food without pulling your hair out…

How are we supposed to stop large companies like Monsanto who are only concerned with profit at the expense of our own health and animal welfare? Shopping organic can be tricky if you haven’t done it before. The answer is one step at a time. This video describes my first time at an organic grocery store, Whole Foods in Schaumburg, Illinois and a couple basic steps toward success. Avoid GMO food…consider animal welfare…avoid pesticides and herbicides…start now! Whether to choose organic food vs. non-organic food is just one of dozens of decisions you probably make every time you go grocery shopping. Choosing organic food supports farmers and producers who believe in good health, quality foods and earth-friendly (though some like to say eco-friendly) sustainable agricultural practices. Organic products are grown in environmentally friendly ways, without toxic or persistent agricultural chemicals. Organic agriculture is a production method that emphasizes the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality. 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides are used in this country every year, and non-organic produce is 4 times more likely than organic to contain some level of residue. Organic produce generally only has residues about 20% of the time, and that’s generally in very trace levels.

Shop with me in a healthy store and look at what we need to look for and avoid in our foods. It’s not always clear.

Just a little heads up….July 4th omg! Ohmygreen.com launches and sells ONLY Non GMO and organic food online, so you don’t have to do all this scrutiny. But its good to know anyway!

Are there GMOs in your vitamins? Many people try to get themselves better by taking multiple supplements but still don’t feel well. When they take a closer look at their vitamins, they find that they most likely contain GMOs. When they find a GMO free ( and often gluten free) source they report feeling better.

Because just one bar of chocolate is never enough. But we don’t want GMO guilt now do we? That’s no fun.

Do your juices have sugar that is only from pure cane sugar? If not it is 90% likely to be GMO. Shop carefully.
